Senate Goes On Recess, To Resume…

The Senate in response to the call to duty patriotically delayed their traditional recess to perform their statutorily assigned responsibility of sitting to approve the ministerial nominees. The Senate even sat on Friday and Monday, days that normally they do not sit. It has now gone on recess to resume sitting on September 24, 2019. But the pertinent question that agitates the mind is what is the value addition of the exercise? From where I stand the unqualified answer is at best next to nothing. Not really all due to the fault of the Senate as it is difficult to dig deep when portfolios were not attached. And therefore the exercise was at some point in time reduced to a circus show when on one occasion during the screening a nominee was asked; wait for it to recite the second stanza of the National Anthem! Some people would probably be anxious awaiting the assignment of portfolios to the Minister. But what is there to expect when apparently the Ministerial list would appear not to have been put together with any such considerations as these positions as we were informed are purely administrative to be occupied by noise makers who are recognized more for their nuisance value than for any constructive engagements. Even as we discuss many states probably in imitation have not constituted their Executive Council after more than two months. And the germane question is whether we are still wondering why we are inflicted with retarded jobless growth which has made unemployment one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy with its consequent social tension exacerbating effect. However we must struggle to keep despair at bay!
