The 37-Year-Reign of Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has finally come to an end, following his resignation from office today. This is coming a week after the army took over power and placed him under house arrest. His resignation Letter stated that his action was voluntary.
Following his resignation, the parliament suspended its impeachment process against Mugabe, after they received a copy of his resignation letter.
The 93-year-old finally succumbed to mounting pressure to leave office.
Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU-PF, resolved to move a motion in parliament on Tuesday (November 21) to impeach Mugabe, after an earlier deadline lapsed.
Celebrations have been reported across the country after Mugabe’s resignation was announced. The state-run Herald Newspaper that until recently was pro-Mugabe also validated his departure from office.
