Given the current rise in cases of sexual assault in the entertainment industry, it could also be that this abuse has been going on in other places as well, especially with the claims of United States goalkeeper, Hope Solo, that she was sexually assaulted by former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Solo accused Blatter of inappropriately “grabbing” her buttocks. In an interview with Portuguese newspaper Expresso, the World Cup winner stated, “I had Sepp Blatter grab my ass. It was at the Ballon d’Or, right before I went on stage.”
Blatter, 81, who was sport’s world boss from 1998 till 2015, when he was disgraced out of office on allegations of corruption, had through his spokesman described the accusation as “ridiculous.”
However, the 36-year-old goalkeeper, who played more than 200 games for the US, said the incident happened at the 2013 Ballon d’Or ceremony when she presented the FIFA women’s world player of the year award alongside Blatter.
In her opinion, sexual harassment had been “normalised” in sport, and she wished more women would speak up.
