On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, the National U-23 Football Team beat their counterparts from Sudan 5-0 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba to qualify for the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Nigeria qualified 5-1 on aggregate after losing the first fixture 1-0 away on Thursday.
In Asaba, the Nigerian team dominated the entire 90 minutes of regulation time.
A brace from Ndifreke Effiong and one goal each from Taiwo Awoniyi, Sunday Faleye and Sunusi Ibrahim ensured the 1996 Olympic champions became the fourth team after hosts Egypt, Zambia and South Africa to earn a berth in the final, scheduled for November 8 to 22.
Awoniyi opened score for Nigeria in the 13th minute with a header that left the Sudanese goalkeeper stranded.
Effiong out-jumped two Sudanese defenders inside the 18-yard box to head home goal number two for Nigeria in the 25th minute. He scored his second goal in the 44th minute through a cross from Awoniyi.
Faleye came off the bench to score Nigeria’s fourth goal in the 67th minute with a fine volley.
Ibrahim sealed victory for Nigeria with the fifth goal in the 69th minute.
Victory for the Olympic Eagles meant no Nigerian team has lost at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
