Van Dijk Competes with Messi, Ronaldo For UEFA Award

Virgil Van Dijk has been shortlisted for the UEFA Player of the Year award. He was shortlisted with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo said the Sport’s European Governing body on Thursday August 15, 2019.

This is the first time that Van Dijk will appear on the list. This was due to his great impact in Liverpool Football club that currently won the last season of the Champions League.

However, Ronaldo who have won three times, has always appear in the final three since the inception of the award in 2011.

Van Dijk appeared for the awards- the Premier League Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Year and he placed a major role in the Merseyside Club’s 6th European Cup victory.

Lionel Messi has won the award two times and he was the leading scorer in La Liga with 36 goals and the Champions League with 12 goals at last season. However, his football club, Barcelona lost to Liverpool in the semi-final stage.

Ronaldo has won five Champions League awards. He did not go far in Europe in his first performance with Juventus, which lose to Ajax Amsterdam in the quarter finals.

The awards will be presented to the winners in Monaco on Thursday August 29, 2019 during the Champions League group stage draw ceremony.
