The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council has commended the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for sacking his aide, Friday Eluro who was involved in the physical assault of a lady.
The Union has also commended the Obi of Owa, HRM Obi Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor, for stripping Eluro off his chieftaincy title in Owa Kingdom.
The NUJ in its official statement on the matter, applauded the Governor for his swift response in terminating the appointment of the aide. It stated that it was dehumanizing for a man of that status to have stripped a woman naked, maintaining that the Governor has shown true example of leadership that believes in the protection of the human dignity.
“The action of Eluro and his cohorts calls for serious concern. It is brazen and downright insane, especially when he should be the one to live by good example by virtue of being a public office holder and one who should represent his principal in good light.
The jungle justice meted out on the victim in the video that has gone viral is a happenstance that often results in the perpetrators going scot free. This is dangerous to society’s wellbeing. Many victims have lost their lives in the process”, the statement read.
While the NUJ is convinced the swift actions of both the governor of Delta State and the Owa monarch were taken in the interest of public good, the Union believes that all the perpetrators of the dastardly act, and not only Eluro, should be investigated and brought to justice as a far reaching measure to act as deterrent to others.
In addition, the Council affirmed that the action of the Owa monarch should be emulated by other traditional rulers by ensuring that chieftaincy title holders in their domains who are in the habit of causing public nuisance are sanctioned accordingly. This, in the considered view of the Union, will help to instill the much needed sanity in our society so urgently.
